Welcome to SMAIG!
STATIA MED ANESTHESIOLOGY INTEREST GROUP
“It requires you to be an internist, a cardiologist, a pulmonologist and even an endocrinologist, all in the course of one case.”
Purpose:
To increase awareness of the spectrum of clinical practice in Anesthesiology and encourage Statia Med medical students to become more familiar with and explore career opportunities within the field of Anesthesiology.
Vision:
The SMAIG will provide a wider range of exposure to Anesthesiology than is available through the University of St. Eustatius School of Medicine curricular experience, with opportunities for mentorship, education, and hands-on experience with U.S. Anesthesiology faculty and residents.
Mission:
The STATIA MED AIG shall:
* Provide a centralized resource for the stateside Statia Med students via the internet to learn more about the field of Anesthesiology.
* Educate Statia Med medical students spread out across the nation about Anesthesiology through online access to information, instruction, discussions, research presentations, and video lectures, as well as networking and mentoring opportunities.
* Provide opportunities for medical students to learn technical skills integral to the practice of Anesthesiology through sharing of local networking contacts to facilitate hands-on workshops and physician shadowing programs.
* Encourage the mentorship of medical students by helping to pair interested students with faculty members and residents.
Why an Interest Group?
Medical students invariably face a variety of demands on their time during school, so they may be unwilling to commit to yet another responsibility, like joining or starting an interest group, without seeing concrete advantages. Other students are simply suspicious of interest groups, feeling that the groups have an agenda to "convince" students that their field is the best. However, the function of any interest group is never to convince a student to go into any particular field. Instead, a good interest group provides the following benefits to its members: First, it provides a variety of programming to help students learn more about their field of interest. Such programming can include lectures and workshops, as well as shadowing and mentoring programs. It also serves to network students with similar interests but diverse backgrounds. Finally, a well-run Interest Group strives to establish mutually beneficial relationships with other organizations, such as affiliated Anesthesiology departments, state and national associations, and other medical student interest groups.
